For the past few months, Addis has had some problems with water flow such that we all had to endure the rationing of this essential service. Some areas have their specific days that they receive water and is usually advisable that this commodity is used wisely. Sometimes during the rationing, you may have received a bill that you, unfortunately, did not understand because your thoughts may have been if you are not receiving water constantly then the water bill should definitely be going down. What you may fail to realize is that there have been some issues that you may have ignored and are now at your expense.
These issues are such as leaking pipes and/or loose pipes. Take it upon yourself to inspect your house and figure out what the problem could be and the following are some of the things that you will discover. When there is no water always remember to close the taps once you have confirmed there is no water. Most times we open the taps to confirm if there is water and when there is none, we leave the taps on overnight so that we can hear the water run. Unfortunately, if the water doesn’t come we tend to forget and leave the taps open all day. Meaning, if the water does come back during the day it will just keep running and go to waste hence an increase in your bills.
There is also the fact that sometimes our taps are loose and therefore water keeps dripping. It is important to note that if left like that all day, most of this water is the reason your bill could go up. Always ensure that you tightly close the taps to ensure that there is no wastage. If the taps need repairs, fix them. It is usually a small cost compared to the water bill at the end of the month. Additionally, always ensure that if the tap is not in use it is tightly shut. This applies for instance when you are washing your hands, brushing your teeth, or doing your laundry. Avoid having a water run because it ends up being wasted.
Also, we tend to use hot water to thaw frozen foods. Instead of this, you can take the foods out a few hours before cooking to save on not only water but also electricity. When cleaning dishes on the sink, a common method used is washing and rinsing with running water from the tap. this in reality uses a lot of water. You can conserve it by putting water in large containers and washing the dishes on them thereby saving on the water and reducing your water bill. While this may not be 100% helpful, if some or all these points are done you will be able to notice a difference in the water bill at the end of the month, I know I did.
